Understanding the 5th Cranial Nerve and Dystonia: A Must-Try Scan for Jaw, Neck, and Full-Body Patterns

Nov 19, 2025

If you’re living with jaw dystonia, cervical dystonia, facial tension, or a generalized pattern that affects the entire body, understanding the 5th cranial nerve (the trigeminal nerve) is essential.

This nerve governs:

  • Facial sensation

  • The chewing muscles

  • The position of the jaw relative to the cranium

  • Deep brainstem functions related to safety and muscle tone

And when the 5th cranial nerve becomes overactive or imbalanced — whether because of jaw clenching, trauma, developmental stress, or asymmetrical occlusion — the entire body adapts.

That’s why so many people with cervical dystonia discover that the issue didn’t start in the neck.

It started in the jaw.

And today, you’ll learn a simple but powerful scan that reveals what your nervous system is actually doing — and what it wants instead.

Why the 5th Cranial Nerve Matters in Dystonia

The trigeminal nerve is part of a tightly coordinated system of 12 pairs of cranial nerves that plug directly into the brainstem.

When one of these nerves becomes dysregulated:

  • Muscle tone shifts

  • Neck muscles overcompensate

  • Jaw muscles fire asymmetrically

  • Facial tension increases

  • The whole body pattern changes

This is why oromandibular dystonia, TMJ dystonia, jaw clenching, and cervical dystonia often share the same root cause.

If you’ve noticed:

  • One side of your jaw is bulkier

  • Your neck pulls in one direction

  • Your right or left side is chronically tight

  • Your body “twists” or shifts in predictable ways

…then your 5th cranial nerve is involved.

The 5th Cranial Nerve Scan (Step-by-Step)

This scan helps you feel the actual pattern your nervous system has been running behind the scenes.

You’ll need:

  • Two folded paper towels

  • A popsicle stick or chopstick

  • Your hands

  • A quiet minute to feel what’s happening

1. Establish your baseline

 With your teeth gently together:

  • Feel the jaw muscles

  • Check symmetry right vs left

  • Scan the temples

  • Feel the suboccipital area (where the head meets the neck)

If you have jaw dystonia, facial dystonia, or cervical dystonia, you will likely detect asymmetry. Write it down.

2. Test the “pitch” of the jaw

Place your folded paper towels between your molars.

Hold the popsicle stick gently between your front teeth.

This:

  • Creates space in the back

  • Encourages the jaw to come forward slightly

  • Lets the suboccipital muscles release

  • Reduces trigeminal nerve over-firing

Most people immediately feel a shift.

3. Test the “roll”

Identify the side that feels more tense or bulky.

  • Place a pad on that side (between the molars)

  • Place the popsicle stick on the opposite side

  • Breathe and feel

This shows whether your jaw wants more height on one side to rebalance the cranial nerve activity.

This is gold.

This is information your nervous system has been asking you to notice.

What to Do With This Insight

What you can develop with this video is already powerful awareness that can help you practice new patterns how you hold your jaw, and can help you get started on guiding your dentist in creating occlusal adjustments that support your health (through an appliance or composite additions on your teeth, for example).

Yet this is just a taste of what is possible. In the Hope for Dystonia Self-Healers Academy, we teach you how to:

  • Repattern the jaw in 3 dimensions

  • Train your nervous system to adopt the balanced pattern

  • Reduce neck compensations

  • Change generalized dystonia patterns

  • Work sovereignly with dentists using our OAEG (Occlusal Adjustment Evaluation Grid)

  • Rewire your brainstem’s outdated protection strategies

Most people have never been taught to listen to their body this way.

But once you feel it — you can’t unfeel it.
